The automated FoodTure hot meals kiosk stationed inside the Los Medanos College Student Union in Pittsburg will conclude campus operations this month after providing quick-service dining for nearly two years. College bookstore and auxiliary services administrators confirmed the vendor initiated a formal ninety-day agreement termination following a fiscal review of ongoing equipment maintenance and operating margins. The planned removal ends an experimental dining partnership designed to offer warm, on-demand meals to East Contra Costa community college students outside standard cafeteria operating hours.
For commuter students navigating evening classes, athletic training sessions, and laboratory coursework, the colorful touch-screen kiosk served as a vital alternative when the main cafeteria and bookstore counters closed. While some undergraduates, including student Riddhee Tailor, valued the convenience of grabbing hot pizza and pasta between transit connections, others noted that ten-dollar price points proved burdensome on student budgets compared to subsidized campus offerings. Student government representatives emphasized that late-day nutritional access remains a recurring concern across community college commuter hubs where local commercial dining options require personal vehicle travel.
Installed during the post-pandemic revitalization of campus auxiliary facilities, the automated kiosk represented an effort by the Contra Costa Community College District to evaluate automated food technology across regional campuses. Los Medanos College, which educates approximately nine thousand students across its primary Pittsburg campus on East Leland Road and the satellite Brentwood Center, has steadily adapted auxiliary amenities to balance operational costs with student retention needs. Bookstore manager Robert Estrada noted that while the current machine agreement is concluding, campus leadership continuously assesses emerging retail partnerships to sustain student welfare.
Until the kiosk is dismantled later this autumn, the unit continues dispensing personal pizzas, macaroni and cheese, and specialty pasta bowls through touch-screen selections placed against the Student Union wall. Meanwhile, auxiliary administrators are highlighting complementary food resources, including local food vendor Taqueria Los Gallos offering fresh lunch burritos Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Center. Additional campus dining schedules, basic needs pantry hours, and bookstore inventory updates remain available through campus support staff reachable at (925) 473-7300.
Campus administrators are currently preparing for the reopening of the permanent Brentwood campus bookstore later this academic term while evaluating potential vendor proposals for Pittsburg dining spaces. College officials encourage students and staff to share dining feedback through the student union advisory committee to guide future auxiliary service solicitations. Detailed schedules for cafeteria operations, weekly campus pantry distributions, and campus life updates are published through the Los Medanos College student services portal.
