Man in Crisis on I-80 Overpass in Berkeley Taken to Hospital

According to The Berkeley Scanner: A passerby called the California Highway Patrol shortly before 1 p.m. on October 5 after seeing a male individual who appeared to need help on the University Avenue overpass above I-80. The man was positioned off the side of the overpass, standing on the base of a traffic sign.

After approximately 45 minutes of negotiations, the man agreed to return to safety on the overpass. Two trained Berkeley Police Department negotiators responded to the scene.

First responders reported 'Patient is safe' shortly before 3 p.m. The person in crisis was taken to the hospital.

All lanes of I-80 East were stopped as of 2:20 p.m. during the incident.
