Candidates vying to represent Berkeley's District 7 on the City Council faced off on Tuesday evening in an energetic public debate along Telegraph Avenue, presenting contrasting visions for student tenant protections, high-density residential development, and public safety across the vibrant UC Berkeley Southside neighborhood. With thousands of university undergraduate and graduate students casting ballots in the upcoming November election, the District 7 seat represents a crucial swing vote on municipal housing and economic policies.

Candidate Aidan Hill, a UC Berkeley alumnus and community housing organizer, emphasized expanding cooperative student housing, capping off-campus rent escalation, and converting underutilized parking structures into city-owned community gathering centers and affordable artist lofts. Competing candidates advocated for market-rate zoning density bonuses to incentivize private construction of multi-story student apartment complexes along Bancroft Way and Shattuck Avenue, arguing that expanding private supply is necessary to alleviate severe regional rent pressure.

The candidates also addressed Southside pedestrian safety, sidewalk maintenance, and municipal emergency response staffing along Telegraph Avenue. Attendees from the Telegraph Business Improvement District questioned the candidates on business tax reform, street lighting improvements, and funding for non-police crisis de-escalation teams. Audience members packed the historic auditorium, submitting dozens of written inquiries regarding environmental sustainability and municipal transit subsidies.

Voters can watch the complete recorded candidate debate, review official campaign finance disclosures, and locate secure ballot drop box sites online at berkeleyca.gov. Election inquiries, voter registration verification, and precinct information are available through the Berkeley City Clerk's department Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM at (510) 981-6900. Official election voting centers throughout the Southside and campus area will open for early voting on October 26.
