Cal Performances announced on Tuesday that it will present a comprehensive milestone concert celebration honoring iconic American composer Steve Reich on the occasion of his 90th birthday, bringing together the legendary Kronos Quartet, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and acclaimed guest percussionists at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. Scheduled for Saturday evening, the retrospective showcases Reich's transformative contributions to 20th and 21st-century music, spanning seminal phase-shifting compositions to emotionally resonant masterworks.

The celebratory program features landmark performances of 'Different Trains,' Reich's haunting autobiographical work scored for string quartet and recorded speech, performed by the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet, who premiered the piece in 1988. The concert will also include dynamic ensemble readings of 'Music for Pieces of Wood,' 'Clapping Music,' and 'Double Sextet,' the propulsive 2009 work that earned Reich the Pulitzer Prize in Music, highlighting the rhythmic precision and polyphonic complexity that redefined contemporary classical music worldwide.

Arts patrons and collegiate music scholars across Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco celebrated the announcement, reflecting on Reich's decades-long creative relationship with Bay Area institutions and musical ensembles. Cal Performances Executive Director Jeremy Geffen emphasized that Reich's minimalist innovations continue to inspire generations of electronic producers, jazz innovators, and orchestral composers across the international arts community.

Concertgoers, classical music students, and performing arts supporters can review the full concert program, read composer program notes, and purchase reserved seats online at calperformances.org. Inquiries regarding student ticket discounts, pre-concert composer symposiums, and accessible seating arrangements may be directed to the Cal Performances Ticket Office Tuesday through Saturday at (510) 642-9988. A post-concert artist reception will take place in the Zellerbach Hall mezzanine following the performance.
