According to City of San Leandro — News Flash: The City of San Leandro held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday (October 1, 2026) for the replacement of the Cary-Haas Pedestrian Bridge. The original bridge, built in 1972, was severely damaged by fallen trees during the March 2023 storm and subsequently removed. The new bridge will restore a key pedestrian route for students, families, and residents near Bancroft Middle School, Memorial Park, San Leandro Main Library, and businesses along Bancroft Avenue.

According to City of San Leandro — News Flash: The new bridge will feature a prefabricated weathering steel truss structure, new abutments, and improved safety and accessibility features. The project is supported by a $5 million donation and the City awarded the construction contract to Con-Quest Contractors, Inc. for $976,775. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
