Ahead of National Native American Heritage Month in November, Las Vegas Paiute Tribe citizen Fawn Douglas and her partner A.B. Wilkinson opened the Wai Gallery and IndigenousAF storefront in Las Vegas — where Douglas weaves baskets from heavy conduit wire and hosts free community collage and chalk-art programs — as part of a nationwide spotlight on Indigenous culture reported by The Associated Press via KCBS Radio. Also in regional travel, health, and community reports this weekend, northbound Interstate 5 reopened near Buttonwillow after a Friday semi-truck collision (Hoodline), 34-year-old DJ Shelbe Hudson shared her recovery from a second stroke (Hoodline), and seasonal benefit events marked milestones in Charlotte (Hoodline) and New York (KCBS Radio / AP).

Native American Heritage Month Spotlights Indigenous Art, Language & Stewardship

Alongside Douglas's Las Vegas gallery, the Associated Press Global Indigenous Reporting Network highlighted 6 community stories across the country:

  • Kipnuk, Alaska & Pascua Yaqui Advocacy: In Kipnuk, Alaska — 1 year after Typhoon Halong damaged 90% of village buildings — Burt and Caley Paul returned to harvest a 5-gallon bucket of coastal Yup'ik salmonberries (naunraqs). In Arizona, 50-year-old Pascua Yaqui ICWA Committee leader Rosa Soto Alvarez has cared for 25 foster children in her home while advocating for the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act.
  • Cherokee River Rights, Language Immersion, Youth Boxing & Ancestral Tattoos: In North Carolina, the NAIWA Daughters (girls ages 10 to 17 led by Chairwoman Jasmine Smith) persuaded the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council to recognize 5 legal rights for the Longperson waterway and fund removal of the Ela Dam. In Minneapolis, teacher Liz Zoongwegiizhigook Zinsli and parent Christian Swor joined the Wicoie Nandagikendan Ojibwe and Dakota immersion sugarbush camp; in Tulsa (where over 60 tribes are represented in public schools), 67-year-old Muscogee and Cherokee alumnus Kerry Butler reflected on joining the 1970s Tulsa Indian Youth Center boxing team at age 15 for 3 years; and 24-year-old Muscogee tattoo practitioner Hodokii Johnson (working with Inchunwa) preserved ancestral 3-line finger markings with Kristin Gentry.

Northbound I-5 Near Buttonwillow Reopens After Two-Semi Collision

In Kern County along California's primary north-south corridor, a collision between a red big rig pulling a white trailer and a gray big rig pulling a white trailer was reported around 11:45 a.m. Friday on northbound Interstate 5 roughly 2 miles north of the Buttonwillow Rest Area, pinning the gray truck's driver inside the cab and closing the No. 2 travel lane. According to KBAK/BakersfieldNow and the California Highway Patrol, emergency crews cleared the wreck and restored traffic across both northbound lanes by 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Young-Adult Stroke Awareness and Seasonal Charity Milestones

  • DJ Shelbe Hudson’s Stroke Recovery: In Owings Mills and Baltimore, 34-year-old Shelbe Hudson (who performs as DJ Huxtable since 2014 and turns 35 on Nov. 1) spent 1 month relearning to walk, talk, and write at Sinai Hospital's 36-bed Berman Brain & Spine Institute stroke unit after suffering her second stroke 7 years after her first stroke at age 25 (which sidelined her from driving for 6 months). According to the University of Maryland Medical System (which runs a Young Stroke Center for ages 18 to 50 and earned 2026-2027 U.S. News High Performing honors) and Dr. Seemant Chaturvedi, adults younger than 50 account for 10% to 15% of all strokes, while the American Heart Association estimates up to 80% of heart disease and stroke events are preventable through lifestyle management.
  • St. Jude Halloween House & 25th Annual NYC Event: In Charlotte's Ballantyne neighborhood, homeowner Dina DiMartino opened her Halloween House at 15631 Ballantyne Country Club Drive at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with 2 off-duty police officers managing traffic to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital — joining a national Skeletons for St. Jude network that grew from 1 house in 2020 to 681 homes in 2024 and 625 to nearly 1,000 homes raising over $1.1 million toward a $2 million 7th-year goal (alongside a Holly Springs display that raised $5,000 across 80 donations after a $3,000 48-hour goal, Wendy Sprouse's 6-year Trinity display, and the Mays family's 8-year, $30,000-to-$40,000 Utah display launched in 2018). In New York, Heidi Klum marked the 25th anniversary of her annual Halloween party in a prosthetic left-hand costume that took 5 to 6 hours to apply, featuring a ring-finger tattoo of her touring husband Tom Kaulitz's name (following her 2022 worm costume and an earlier 8-foot, 2.4-meter Transformer look).
