SAN FRANCISCO & SAN JOSE, Calif. — Voters across the San Francisco Bay Area headed to polling places and official ballot drop boxes on Tuesday, November 3, highlighted by a generational congressional succession in San Francisco and countywide ballot verification operations at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.
San Francisco Voters Choose Between Connie Chan and Scott Wiener to Succeed Nancy Pelosi
As reported by KCBS Radio, San Francisco voters are electing a new representative to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in nearly 4 decades following the retirement decision of 86-year-old former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Because 2 Democrats advanced from the June primary, the general election pits San Francisco District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan against California State Senator Scott Wiener:
- Supervisor Connie Chan: Endorsed by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and backed by labor unions, Chan has centered her campaign on working-class affordability, support for Proposition 40 (California's proposed one-time 5% billionaire wealth tax), and a moratorium on new artificial intelligence data center construction until energy grid and environmental impacts are evaluated.
- State Senator Scott Wiener: Endorsed by former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, Wiener has represented San Francisco in the California State Senate for the past decade, where he authored landmark legislation streamlining housing approvals and establishing California's frontier AI safety and transparency framework.
Inside the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters Ahead of the 8 p.m. Deadline
In the South Bay, NBC Bay Area detailed the chain-of-custody and tabulation workflow inside the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters headquarters in San Jose, where San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan dropped off his completed ballot ahead of Tuesday's 8 p.m. close of polls.
Michael Borja, associate communications officer for the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, explained that bipartisan courier teams collect sealed ballot bags from official drop boxes across the county throughout Election Day and transport them to the central processing facility. Once inside, every return envelope undergoes automated sorting and signature verification against the voter's registration file before bipartisan extraction boards separate the secrecy sleeve from the ballot card for high-speed optical scanning.
Election officials reminded voters that in-person vote centers and official ballot drop boxes close promptly at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, while vote-by-mail ballots postmarked on or before November 3 will be counted if received by county election offices within 7 days (by November 10).
